At DERMOL, activities within the EDU4PlastiCircular (EDU4Plastic) project focus on addressing one of today’s key environmental challenges—plastic pollution and the transition towards a circular economy. The project develops knowledge, tools, and educational approaches that support more sustainable practices across sectors.
These ideas, however, do not remain limited to project work alone.
Alenka Dermol, a member of the DERMOL team and an active tango DJ, has brought the inspiration from the EDU4Plastic project into her work within the tango community. This led to the creation of the Tango UpCycle initiative, developed as a natural continuation of the project in her free time.
In tango, clothing is an important part of the culture. At the same time, many garments are made from synthetic materials, which contribute to microplastic pollution. The initiative, therefore, encourages a shift in perspective—from buying new clothing towards reusing and redesigning existing pieces.
A key part of this initiative is the collaboration with Urša Štrukelj, an artist who creatively redesigns and transforms garments. Through her work, existing clothes are given new life, combining artistic expression with sustainable values.
Alenka has integrated this initiative directly into her milonga events, where Urša’s work is presented to the tango community. By actively promoting upcycled fashion, these events become not only cultural gatherings but also spaces for raising environmental awareness.
This example demonstrates how the impact of the EDU4PlastiCircular project extends beyond formal education and institutional frameworks. It shows how project values can inspire practical actions in everyday life and in local communities.
Sustainability is not only about large-scale solutions. It is also about individual initiatives, creativity, and the willingness to rethink habits—even in spaces such as the dance floor.
